“The mountains are calling and I must go.” – John Muir

I love living in a big city but sometimes, I need an escape. An escape to the mountains. I never feel more at peace than when I make it to the top of a mountain and am gifted with an amazing view. Hikes in the woods are just as soothing. I love the natural beauty that hiking brings to the table.

I obviously don’t hike as much as I’d want to, but I plan a trip out west every year to hit the mountains. Whether it be to ski or to hike (or sometimes both in one trip!), I am obsessed with nature.

I am making it a goal for 2017 to visit destinations that allow me to hike the gorgeous summits that surround us. I’m jealous of those that live out west and those that live by hiking trails, but it only makes it that much more special for me to visit.

I know I’m already heading to Phoenix, Salt Lake, Whistler and Denver next year, so I need some hiking gear! If you landed on my blog, I’m sure you travel, or know someone that frequently travels. Hiking, to me, is a huge part of traveling. Which is why I’m putting together the top 5 gifts for the avid hiker!

1. Hammock

I’ll be the first one to admit, I’m not in the best shape ever. My workout  regimens aren’t exactly on par with preparing to hike the majority of a vacation.Which is why I would love a hammock to take a break and recharge from the grueling uphill battle. There should be plenty of trees around to set up one of these lightweight hammocks and rest those muscles.

2. Thermal Blanket

It can get a little chilly in those high altitudes. You can start at the base in a tee shirt and shorts, and by the time you’re at the top – you’re on snow! What better to relax in your hammock with than a comfortable blanket. Reward yourself at the end of a hike and take a nap under the stars. I can’t imagine anything else more perfect.

3. Hiking Boots

Hiking boots are definitely a hiking item I need to invest in. I’ve hiked up mountains in Denver and through national parks in Ireland in just my Nike gym shoes. Nothing wrong with that, but I could use something more sturdy with better traction. Some shoes I really wouldn’t mind getting dirty!

4. Water Bottle

On long hikes, you’re bound to get dehydrated. That’s kind of a no-brainer. There are plenty of options out there for water bottles to bring on long hikes, but be sure to make sure they are insulated. As a bonus, you can find water bottles that include purifiers!

5. Backpack

Where am I going to store my hammock, blanket, snacks, water bottle, etc? In a new backpack! Keep in mind, hikers wear this for hours at a time, so you’ll need something comfortable, and one that will last. I’d like a hiking backpack to be adjustable and easily organized.
