Vicksburg, MI

Vicksburg, MI was the perfect weekend getaway after spending too many weekends in a row in the Windy City. I was delighted to be surrounded by trees and the smell of freshly mowed grass. You may be asking yourself, ‘Why a weekend getaway to Vicksburg?’ It’s where my boyfriend grew up and we were heading there to visit with his family and friends.

The trip started off a little rough – the Amtrack was reportedly experiencing difficulties with the brakes. The story later changed to there was a problem with the engine. Then, they had to replace an entire engine before we even got out of Chicago.  They had already boarded us and we went about 100 yards, before we sat on the train going no where for four hours. Talk about a great first train experience! We got into Kalamazoo train station around 11pm (instead of the planned time of 7pm), so we decided to call it quits on the day and head back to get a good nights sleep.

My boyfriend and his family love golf. I have never golfed a day in my life on an actual course, so this was something new to me. We had a tee time for 9am and we played 9 holes. I actually didn’t do too bad! Beginners luck I suppose. Of course there were a few whiffs, but that was definitely expected. We then went to the local high school to run around and play ball with his nephews before cleaning up for dinner and a movie (ps. Mad Max is super good! I highly recommend it!)

On Sunday, we woke up early for another tee time with his friends. This is where I embarrassed myself. I played way worse then the day before, and was getting frustrated. I guess that’s the game of golf! After that, I got to check out one of the many breweries near Kalamazoo and visit Western Michigan’s campus, where he went to school. We ended the weekend with a grill-out and apple pie.

Luckily, the trip back to Chicago was a lot less painful then the trip out of Chicago. There were no delays on the Monday morning Amtrack, and I made it to the city on time for work. The weekend was perfect, and I can’t wait to go back to work on my golf game!
